What happened at Dyatlov Pass? What happened at Never has the end of a trip been so disastrous. No trip had ever left so much mystery behind.
63 years ago, 9 climbers went on the last trip of their lives without knowing the terrifying end that awaited them. How could they have known that the mystery they would leave behind would be too terrific to be solved for 63 years?
The mystery of the Dyatlov Pass case, which has inspired many conspiracy theories for 63 years, began on January 27, 1959, when a 9-member student team from the Ural Polytechnic Institute in the Soviet Union set out on an expedition to the north of the Ural Mountains.
A group of 10 people had decreased to 9 because of Yuri Yudin, he sprained his foot and got sick and returned, 2 of them women and 7 of them men, when he stopped the trip and returned. Yuri Yudin’s sciatic nerves were not allowing him to walk any more. Yudin distributed his belongings to the other members of the group and returned to his house. Yudin was very upset about this situation. But perhaps he did not yet know that he had taken the biggest chance in his life by not joining the trip.
The first few days were quite normal for the young people who reached the starting point on January 28. The photos showed how happy they were. They were all laughing and having fun, unaware of what would happen to them a few days later. The trip, which was planned to last three weeks, the leader was It was Igor Dyatlov. (The Dyatlov Pass the name was also given because of the surname of Igor Dyatlov, the leader of the group.)
Igor had promised to send a message to a sports club in the city after completing the trip on February 12.
No one panicked at first when the message didn’t come. Because they had returned late due to bad weather conditions before. The group, whose goal was to reach Mount Gora Otorten, experienced things that could never be solved on the night of February 2, 1959, on the freezing slopes of Mount Kholat Syakhl, which means “Mountain of Death” in the local Mansice language.
When the group could not be heard from for a long time, search and rescue efforts were launched with the support of the army and helicopters. Although the campsite was eventually found, there were no climbers in the campsite, there was only a smashed tent and the climbers’ belongings. An examination began around the tent. During the investigations, the footprints of the climbers were identified and their tracks were started to be followed. As the investigation deepened, details that would make researchers and residents of the region go crazy were coming to light. During the search around the tent, they were confronted with shocking detail. The climbers had torn the tent from the inside and had run out of the tent in the dark of night without even taking their boots and running on the snow in socks. What could have happened so that they tore the tent from the inside in the cold and fled? Why did these experienced climbers run out of their tents without equipment, without even wearing shoes? What happened that night? What made the climbers so scared that they would go out at -30 degrees at night?
Rescuers had desperately headed to the wooded area in the hope of finding the bodies of the climbers now. They had found Yuri Krivonichenko’s and Yuri Dorochenko’s lifeless bodies under a cedar tree 500 meters ahead. But they had no clothes on, they were both naked. These two people had gathered the branches of a cedar tree, lit a fire and tried to get warm. The clothes on the climbers had been taken away. It later became clear that the surviving climbers had put on these people’s clothes, seeing that they were dead when they reached their friends.
Investigators found three more bodies between the cedar tree and the camp. After the incident, it was determined that the three climbers lost their lives separately on the way back to the camp. These three climbers were; the leader of the team Igor Dyatlov, Zina Kolmogorava and Rustem Slobodin.
It took more than two months to reach the bodies of the other four young people. On May 4, the bodies of four more climbers were found 75 meters from the cedar tree. The bodies that were found were so scary that the research team who found the body said that they had jumped into icy water to get over the shock of this image. Because one of the bodies, Dubinina’s tongue, eyes and lips were missing, and she also had broken ribs. Fractures in Zolotarev’s ribs were also seen. Interestingly, there were no external impact marks on either of the two bodies, which were found to have fractures in their ribs. In other words, although two of the bodies had fractures in the skull and the other two had fractures in the ribs, the examinations found that they had not been subjected to any blows or violence. That was very interesting.
But there was something much more interesting. During the subsequent examination, radiation residues were found on the clothes. Another surprising detail of the incident was Rustem Slobodin’s freezing form. Slobodin’s cheeks and lips were swollen as he had been beaten. In addition, Slobodin’s turning his back while holding his stomach suggested that he was continuing to take blows and that there were signs of a struggle. The first question that came to mind was, “Who could Rustem Slobodin have wrestled with that night after his friend died?” Because during the examinations, no footprints were found in the vicinity. Despite all this, no signs of injury were found on the outer surfaces of the traumatized parts of the bodies. Although the destruction of the bodies was likened to being hit by a car, the fact that there were no scars added to the mystery of the incident.
So what had happened to these young people? This event caused a lot of conspiracy theories, from bigfoot to aliens and secret military experiments.
The Bigfoot Theory
Although many people believe that climbers were attacked by Yeti, that is Bigfoot, who is said to live mostly in snowy mountainous areas and are described as a snow monster, the fact that no human species other than climbers found footprints at the scene after studies also refute this theory. However, a photo found on the camera of one of the climbers shows a creature resembling a Yeti. But this could also have been a conspiracy organized by the state later to lay the blame on bigfoot. Because in some theories, it was also believed that the killer was the state itself. Some people believed that the government was hiding the autopsy reports and that the government was responsible for these deaths.
Because four cameras were found at the scene and only one of the nine climbers who fled the scene, Semyan Zolotarev, had taken his camera with him. Oddly enough, these camera recordings were not shared with anyone. Also, as there is a general diary of the group, Yuri Doroshenko kept a private diary. everyone in the 9-person team kept a diary in their way and took little notes. But these could not be reached in the examinations either. Although the Russian authorities launched an investigation immediately after the incident, no clear conclusions could be reached during the autopsies performed on the bodies. Forensic experts announced that the five bodies died by hypothermia (that is, freezing with the effect of cold). However, the file had been secretly shelved without being solved by writing “formidable natural force” on the causes of death. Allegedly, the climbers were killed by the KGB, the intelligence and secret service of the Soviet Union, because they witnessed an incident in that region that concerned national security and they should not have seen. In other words, the team witnessed a secret experiment of the state in the region and was killed for this reason. The fact that the government was trying to cover up the incident suggested that the team might have been killed because they witnessed a secret experiment.
Tatyana in Sverdlovsk did not attend the funeral of his older brother Igor, the leader of the group. His parents thought it might be too traumatic for her.
Tatyana “Then I saw the photo of him in the coffin. It was horrible. There was no trace of his former self.” she says and adds: “My mother was able to recognize him only by the gap between his teeth. His hair had turned grey.” Tatyana also says that their families believe that the army is behind these deaths
“It’s hard to tell what happened there. But they told the families ‘You will never find out the truth, so stop asking questions’. What could we do? Remember, in those days, if you were told to shut up, you would shut up.”
Could the climbers have witnessed a practice or experiment in that area that they should not have seen? Although the Russian Government denied this, the pictures and videos of the night of the incident were not shared.
Of course, it was obvious that there was something strange about the phone, GPRS and other electronic devices being disabled, the cameras and cameras found on this mountain were taken hostage by the Russians. But could it be that what the state was hiding was related to aliens, not an experiment?
Alien Theory
Some people blamed aliens. Because allegedly, strange lights were seen in the sky at the time of the incident. A strange piece of metal was also found at the scene, and the fact that some of the climbers had traces of radiation on their clothes raised the suspicion that aliens would commit this massacre. The fact that no external footprints were found at the scene and no scars were formed despite the destruction seen on the bodies suggested that it might be an alien technology. In other words, although there were many fractures on the bodies found, there were no signs of impact during the autopsy. For example, in the first autopsy of Rustem Slobodin, it is found that there is swelling on the left half of his lip and face. And there are injuries in the internal organs due to a very severe blow. Slobodin curled up as if he had a stomach cramp. Investigators examining the position in which the body was found think that Slobodin may have struggled with someone. However, no trace of this struggle and the severe blow to which he was subjected can be found on the outer surface of his body.
Yuri Krivonishenko, on the other hand, has a part of his nose cut off. In the bodies found, the eyes, tongue, etc. there are missing. An explanation could not be given for the fact that the cuts related to the disappearance of the organs on the bodies were made quite cleanly. In this context, what could have caused this destruction to these people could have been supernatural energy. Because the thing that could have done this destruction without leaving a scar or a blow mark could not have been an animal or a human, but aliens or some other bad energy in the universe.
In addition, it is noticed that there is a moving and luminous object in this photo, which is claimed to belong to Yuri Krivonishenko. It may be possible that the photo was taken a little before the incident.
Traumatic Hypothermia Theory
by the year 1990, with the restructuring of Russia, an attempt was made to open the veil of secrecy again, and the incident extracted from the archive began to be investigated again. But the relatives of the young climbers were never satisfied with the answers they received. Because the response they received was so ridiculous. “traumatic hypothermia”
Hypothermia is usually caused by exposure to cold air or immersion in cold water. It is a very dangerous condition that results in a serious decrease in body temperature as a result of losing heat much faster than the heat that the body can produce at its fastest capacity and can cause death if emergency intervention is not provided. Yuri Yudin, who is the most important source of information about the incident, has repeatedly stated how brave his friends were and that they were not ordinary climbers enough to freeze to death. Some scientists have stated that there is a case of “paradoxical undressing” in people who died from hypothermia due to a burning sensation and attributed naked corpses to this. Some researchers have put forward the thesis that there may have been an avalanche and that the climbers may have left the tent in that way to escape the avalanche. But the idea of an avalanche seemed the most remote possibility because there was a lot of evidence contradicting it. Firstly, the rescue team had found no evidence of an avalanche at the place where the incident took place, and the angle of the slope was not steep enough for an ordinary avalanche.
If you want to ask what the severing of people’s eyes and tongues has to do with hypothermia and an avalanche, don’t ask, because they don’t know either.
Mansi People
Immediately after the deaths, eyes were turned to the Mansi people living in the region. It was claimed that the climbers may have been attacked by local Mansi people living in the area. The Mansi, one of the 45 indigenous peoples living in Russia, had survived by hunting, fishing and herding reindeer for hundreds of years. A book published in 2015 on the subject claims that Mansi hunters ate magic mushrooms used in shamanic rituals and were under hallucinative influence, and when they saw the students entering the sacred Mansi territory, they attacked as if they were crazy.
Is one of people Valeri Anyamov stated that such theories do not reflect the truth, he said the following words about the events that took place at that time: “After the Soviet prosecutors began to think that we Mansis had killed them, a large number of people from our circle were arrested. A peasant woman, who is no longer among us, was telling us that the secret police tortured them. I don’t know if it’s true, but they were questioned for weeks.”
“If one of our people had committed a crime, they would have thrown us all in prison, because the state was crueller back then. In those days, people were executed by the death squad without even a trial or investigation. Sinister places or areas with negative energy were made up by the mainstream media.”
Valeri’s 80-year-old mother Sanka was one of the few villagers who survived from that period to this day. Sanka remembers seeing something unusual in the sky while collecting wood one evening in February 1959.
“On the way back from the forest, I started to see the village opposite us,” he says and adds: “At that time, a bright, burning object appeared in the sky. It had a wider front, a narrow back and a tail. Sparks were falling from it as it flew.” Maybe it was a comet, but Sanka remembers that the elders in the village who saw it said it would bring bad luck.
Books have been written about the incident in many languages. Films and documentaries were made. There was even a video game made in Poland. Almost 75 different theories have been produced, although the ‘Dyatlov Pass’ file, also called the Devil’s Pass, is opened by researchers from all over the world from time to time, to get access to many sites or videos “the mystery has been solved” although such titles have been thrown out, all the studies conducted so far have been inconclusive.
The climber, who is known as the first witness of the incident, who had to leave his team after spraining his ankle Yuri Yudin stated that he had to receive psychological support throughout his life, he said that he had been seeing his friends in dreams all his life after the death of his friends.
Yuri, who came to life on April 27, 2013, without being able to find out what happened to his friends, said after the incident, the word he said remained in his mind as a legendary word that shows how mysterious the Dyatlov Pass is.
“If I had the right to ask God one question all my life, it would be, “what happened to my friends that night?”
