Do you believe in haunted or cursed forts? Bhangarh Fort is one of them, notorious as a mysterious location. This fort is nestled in a forest and boasts impressive scenery.
However, visitors are greeted with a warning sign before entering the fort. The sign states that legal action will be taken against those who visit the fort at night.
Whether the fort is genuinely mysterious or just a story concocted to attract tourists remains unknown. Nevertheless, many tourists visit the fort to see ghosts and experience adrenaline-pumping moments.
Located in India’s Sariska region, between the cities of Jaipur and Alwar, Bhangarh Fort was built in 1573 by Raja Bhagwan Das for his son, Madho Singh. The fort has four entry points: Lahori Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Phulbari Gate, and Delhi Gate. Within its premises lie Nachan Ki Haveli, a dancer’s palace, Jauhari Bazar, a marketplace, and several Hindu temples. The fort is 235 kilometers from Delhi and 88 kilometers from the nearest airport.
The mystery and eerie stories of Bhangarh Fort are still circulated among the local populace. Tourists hear these captivating and frightening stories from both locals and guides eager to attract visitors.
The Story of Bhangarh Fort
According to the first story, a Tantrik (sorcerer) named Singhiya, who was involved in black magic, fell in love with Bhangarh’s Princess Ratnavati. He placed a love potion in a perfume bottle intending to bewitch the princess when she went to buy it. However, the princess noticed and threw the bottle onto a pile of rocks, breaking it. Mysteriously, the rocks moved and crushed Singhiya.
Legend has it that with his dying breath, Singhiya cursed the princess, her family, and the village. Shortly thereafter, the princess, her family, and most of the village perished, turning the area into ruins.
Still, some believe that Princess Ratnavati will be reborn and restore the village to its former prosperity and beauty.
According to the second story, during the fort’s construction, a holy man named Baba Bala Nath living at the foot of the hill allowed the construction on one condition: that the fort’s shadow must never fall on his home. The shadow did not touch his house initially, but later, the shadow of newly constructed pillars fell on his home.
Angered, Baba Bala Nath cursed the inhabitants and the village, which soon fell into ruins. Baba Bala Nath’s stone house, still standing near the fort, can be seen today. After being completely abandoned in 1873, night-time at the fort is reportedly filled with sounds of crying women, jingling dance bangles, and the voices of those who died there. Additionally, it is said that those who enter the fort at sunset never return. The local community, disturbed by these sounds and convinced of the curse, chose to settle far from the fort.
What Happened to Gaurav Tiwari?
Many have tried to unravel this mystery over the years. Paranormal investigator Gaurav Tiwari spent a night in the fort and reported seeing no ghosts. However, five years after his visit, he told his wife that he felt drawn to a malevolent force he could not control and subsequently committed suicide. Many believe that the curse of Bhangarh Fort led to his death. Due to these claims, Bhangarh Fort is considered one of the most haunted and eerie places in India.
Authorities have placed an informational and warning sign at Bhangarh Fort because tourists persist in visiting at night hoping to see ghosts. The sign, written in Hindi, warns, “It is prohibited to enter Bhangarh Fort and roam its surroundings during sunrise and sunset. Legal action will be taken against those who ignore these warnings.”
Bhangarh Fort continues to attract tourists interested in its historical and mysterious allure. However, distinguishing between fact and legend can be challenging. If you are seeking an adventure filled with spooky stories, Bhangarh Fort might captivate you, but all visitors should prioritize their safety and adhere to local regulations.
Visitors are advised to be cautious both to experience the mystery and ensure their safety when exploring Bhangarh Fort’s mystical atmosphere and impressive scenery.
